Supplemental Instructions for using DESQview with Micro
Display Systems GENIUS
The following information applies to DESQview version 2.24
used with a Micro Display Systems GENIUS, GENIUS plus or GENIUS
squared display adapter and monitor.
FEATURES
DESQview when used with GENIUS displays, will give you use of
the full screen display for your program windows. On the
GENIUS or GENIUS plus, DESQview can arrange the screen to view
25, 41, 66, or 82 lines by 80 columns. On the GENIUS²,
DESQview can arrange the screen rows and columns to: 25 x 80 or
66 x 80 or 66 x 127. DESQview window sizes can be set to use
the entire screen or view several full normal applications
screens (25 lines x 80 rows) simultaniously.
DESQview also supports applications which use GENIUS
graphics modes.
DESQview can be used with the GENIUS VHR or G2 utilities which
allows programs to set the number of screen lines, background
color or split the screen. (Such as LOTUS 1-2-3 dual monitor,
Microsoft Word.)
INSTALLATION - GENIUS or GENIUS plus (Model 420)
So DESQview can take full advantage of your GENIUS or GENIUS plus
display, note the following changes to the normal DESQview
installation as described in the DESQview manual Chapter 1:
Install the VHR_ANSI.SYS file (found on the GENIUS UTILITIES
diskette) in the CONFIG.SYS file used to boot DOS on your
PC. (This will only be needed if you wish to use the VHR
program in windows which "Writes directly to screen".)
If you are using QEMM version 4.2 or higher, be sure to exclude
the video graphics area 0A000 - 0C7FF. The following is an
example of a CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\GENIUS\VHR_ANSI.SYS
DEVICE=C:\QEMM.SYS X=A000-C7FF
FILES=20
BUFFERS=15
When the DESQview Setup screen appears, select "Enter" for
ADVANCED setup procedure. Then select "V" for Video Monitor.
In the first field type 5 for other. In the Current
Graphics driver field type "GRFGNS.DVR". Press Enter to
continue with DESQview's installation.
INSTALLATION - GENIUS² (Model 1000)
So DESQview can take full advantage of your GENIUS squared
display, note the following changes to the normal DESQview
installation as described in the DESQview manual Chapter 1:
Install the G2_ANSI.SYS file (found on the GENIUS UTILITIES
diskette) in the CONFIG.SYS file used to boot DOS on your
PC. Make sure to run the G1LOAD command with G1_MDS.OUT.
(Recommended in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.)
If you are using QEMM version 4.2 or higher, be sure to exclude
the video graphics area 0A000 - 0B7FF. The following is an
example of a CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\GENIUS2\G2_ANSI.SYS
DEVICE=C:\QEMM.SYS X=A000-B7FF
FILES=20
BUFFERS=15
When the DESQview Setup screen appears, select "Enter" for
ADVANCED setup procedure. Then select "V" for Video Monitor.
In the first field type 5 for other. In the Current
Graphics driver field type "GRFGNS2.DVR". Press Enter to
continue with DESQview's installation.
REARRANGE VIDEO OPTIONS MENU
To have DESQview change the number of lines displayed
on the screen, from the DESQview menu press "R" for the Rearrange
menu, then press "V" for Video options menu.
The GENIUS or GENIUS plus options:
1 thru 4 to select the number of display lines you want
DESQview to display, 5 - 7 to select the foreground /
background text intensity of the display.
The GENIUS² Model 1000 options:
1 thru 3 to select the number of display rows and columns
you want DESQview to display, 4 and 5 to select the
foreground / background text intensity.
CHANGING A PROGRAM'S INFORMATION
It is useful to customize your applications with DESQview for the
GENIUS displays. For programs that run in "small" windows (do NOT
write directly to the screen or text applications and QEMM) note the
following on the advanced options screen of Change a Program:
"Writes directly to screen" option must be set to "N".
"Virtualize text/graphics" option must be set to "T" or "N".
MAXIMUM HEIGHT, MAXIMUM WIDTH, STARTING HEIGHT, and STARTING
ROW can use numbers from 1 to 82. (Normally this would be 1 to
25.) For Lotus 1-2-3 version 2 and DESQview companions DOS
Services or DESQview Notepad, use this feature to look at 82
lines at one time!
"Text Pages" must be set to 1 when the Maximum Height is not
25.
For applications that use that write directly to the screen using
the MDS graphics mode (e.g. Ventura Publisher, PageMaker, AutoCAD)
note the following for Change a Program:
"Writes directly to screen" option must be set to "Y".
"Virtualize text/graphics" option must be set to "T" or "N".
"Text Pages" should be set to 1.
"Graphics Pages" must be set to 1.
Note DESQview requires 128k or 256k of memory to save and
restore a graphics application screen image. DESQview will use
Expanded memory if available, or Vdisk or hard disk to save the
screen image. When the ALT key is pressed from a graphics
application, DESQview will "curtain" the screen then present
the DESQview menu. The graphics screen will be restored when
you switch back to the application.
For applications that use that write directly to the screen using
the DUAL mode (e.g. LOTUS 1-2-3) note the following for Change a
Program:
"Writes directly to screen" option must be set to "Y".
"Displays Graphics information" should be set to "N".
"Virtualize text/graphics" option must be set to "N".
"Text Pages" must be set to 5 and Maximum Height to 25.
When the ALT key is pressed, the graphics portion will
disappear, but be restored when you switch back to the
application.
The VHR utility should be run from a batch file as in
the following example:
VHR DUAL/N
